Consent to be Part of a Research Study
Cancer Surveillance and Outcomes Research Team (CanSORT) investigators at the University of Michigan are conducting an NCI-sponsored research study to address challenges in individualizing breast cancer care. CancerDoctorsLikeMe is an interactive website to educate clinicians about breast cancer practice norms, patients’ experiences, and effective communication strategies.
As a medical professional that sees breast cancer patients, you are aware of the increasingly critical conversations that take place during a consultation. Topics such as contralateral prophylactic mastectomy (CPM) and patients’ perception of their recurrence risk have more recently received high attention. At this time, there is a great need to better understand how patients and their doctors are discussing these significant topics during the consultation.
Participating in the study involves the following things:
- Log into the website with the access code that is provided for you and create an account, which will include answering a few questions about you and your medical practice.
- The content of the website will vary based on your medical specialty and the access code that was provided. You will be randomized to view one version of the site. All versions will include video clips of patients and their doctors discussing the critical conversations mentioned above. In this section, you will be asked to respond via audio or text (this will be indicated on the page) as if you were speaking to this patient in your own consultation setting.
- Lastly, we will ask a few questions to gather feedback about your experience using the website.
- At a later date in 2017, you will be invited to come back to CancerDoctorsLikeMe and view all versions/content of the website if interested.
The website activity should take about 20-30 minutes of your time, depending on the version you view.
